    Sources

How to follow the evidence and identify the images behind a reading.

    Start with the reading's notes

Source notes belong with the passages they support. Look for the notes and references within a reading for the relevant works, authors, page references or collection records.

A source may be a surviving document, a later chronicle, an archaeological report or a modern historian's interpretation. These offer different kinds of evidence. A later account can tell us about a story's reception without establishing every detail of the original event.

Read the limits as well as the claim

Notes may identify a disputed interpretation, uncertain dating or reliance on an accessible summary rather than a complete original work. Those limits matter when deciding what a passage can establish.

In Relationships, evidence grades help distinguish the support behind a connection. Read the evidence description alongside the grade.

    Images, objects and illustrations

Look beside an image, in its caption or in the reading's image information for its creator, collection, source and rights information where supplied. An object's date and the period discussed in the reading may be different.

Interpretive illustrations help explain a setting or relationship. They should be read alongside the text and captions, rather than treated as surviving eyewitness images.
