Gion Matsuri: shrines, floats and neighbourhoods

Gion Matsuri is the July festival of Kyoto’s Yasaka Shrine and its parish neighbourhoods. Portable-shrine journeys, float processions, evening displays and neighbourhood preparations form a connected cycle rooted in prayers against disease and misfortune.
