Everyday life in a neighbourhood

Shōtengai: shops sharing a street

A shōtengai is a concentration of shops, restaurants and services along a street or within a district. The word can also refer to an association of local businesses. A roof, pedestrian-only access and exclusively independent shops are not necessary features.

Dagashiya: the neighbourhood sweet shop

A dagashiya sells inexpensive snacks, often alongside small toys or simple amusements. Understanding the shop means looking at small purchases and neighbourhood relationships as well as the sweets on its shelves.

Chōnaikai: organising work within a neighbourhood

Chōnaikai and jichikai are neighbourhood-based residents’ associations. They may organise cleaning, disaster preparation, notices and local festivities. Their activities and internal rules vary; cooperation with a municipality does not make an association a municipal department.

Kominkan: organising learning close to home

A kominkan is a Japanese social-education institution that supports local learning, cultural activities and exchange. Its role includes programmes and organisation as well as the rooms where residents meet.

Japan’s public libraries: borrowing, enquiries and local memory

Municipal and prefectural public libraries connect people with materials for reading, research and learning. Lending is a familiar service, alongside enquiries, children’s reading, local collections and cooperation between libraries. National and university libraries have different institutional roles.

Bon odori: dancing with community and remembrance

Bon odori comprises dance traditions associated with welcoming and sending off ancestral and other spirits during the Bon season. Repertoires, movements and participation vary locally. Circular dancing is common, but no single circle, tower or costume defines every example.

Kissaten: drinks, light meals and places to stay

Konbini: a small shop connected to a larger system

Japanese convenience stores sell food, drinks and everyday goods, often over long opening hours and alongside other services. Ordering, distribution, equipment and business arrangements make that small shop work.

Municipalities in Japan: the local level of government

Cities, towns and villages are Japan’s basic local governments. They occupy the municipal tier of a two-tier system shared with prefectures. A city does not govern neighbouring towns and villages.

Kōban: a neighborhood base for work beyond the desk

Ageing Japan: Population Change in Everyday Life

Japan’s ageing society has a large and rising share of people aged 65 or over. This population change affects households, work, care, housing and local services. Older people themselves have widely different resources, health and ways of living.

Festival hayashi: an ensemble follows the festival’s actions

Festival hayashi encompasses instrumental ensembles and associated performance practices within local festivals. Music connects with floats, processions and dancing, while neighbourhoods and preservation groups transmit it. Instruments, numbers, repertoire and occasions differ between places.
