A 30-second introduction
Station stamps: a printed souvenir of place
駅スタンプ
A station stamp lets a traveller press a railway station’s name and local imagery onto paper. Collected impressions can record a journey or form part of an organised stamp rally.

- A stamp book preserves impressions from different stops.
- Permanent stamps and limited-time rallies have different arrangements.
- Designs often combine a station name with local subjects.
01
Reading the design
A station name identifies the stop, while buildings, landscapes or local products give the impression a particular sense of place. Lettering, colour and the enclosing shape help distinguish one design from another. A sequence of impressions can turn a stamp book into a record of a route.
02
The impression and the activity
Placing the paper on a steady surface and pressing evenly helps produce a complete impression. A permanent station stamp can be collected on its own. A rally adds a specified period, participating locations and completion conditions. Ekitag, launched on 1 March 2023, added a digital form of collecting: travellers scan a station’s NFC tag to save its impression in an app and can combine it with a photograph. Digital events follow their own participation rules.
03
Railway promotion and collecting

Nemuro’s 1933 stamp
The practice predates postwar travel campaigns. Hanasaki Line’s local history reproduces a 1933 Nemuro station stamp showing the Ochiishi radio station and Sirius, the seaplane in which Charles and Anne Lindbergh reached Nemuro in 1931. Local infrastructure and a remembered visit became a portable impression of the place.
Postwar travel campaigns
Railway travel campaigns such as Discover Japan in the 1970s and the later Watashi no Tabi stamp series connected collecting with journeys to local destinations. After the division and privatisation of Japanese National Railways, individual railway companies continued to develop regional designs and events.
04
One coordinated redesign
JR East’s Tokyo branch renewed stamps at 78 stations in 2020. Each station combined a kanji with local motifs, such as Ueno’s panda and Shinbashi’s steam locomotive. The set used four outline shapes and five colours. It demonstrates how a coordinated set can remain recognisable while giving each station a distinct image.
Check your understanding
What does an impression record?
A station name and imagery associated with that place.
Is every permanent stamp a timed rally?
No. Rallies add their own dates and participation conditions.
Does 78 mean the national total?
No. It is the scope of a particular JR East Tokyo-branch renewal in 2020.
